Presearch is supported by a community of node operators who process user search requests and earn rewards in the form of the Ethereum-based PRE token.
Beginning September 1, the decentralized search engine Presearch will be listed as the default option on all new and factory-reset devices sold in the United Kingdom and Europe, potentially eroding Google’s market dominance.
Google’s decision to make Presearch the default browser option comes after a protracted legal battle with the European Commission over allegations that the company used Android to cement its search engine dominance. Google was fined a record 4.24 billion euros by the European Commission’s antitrust regulator in 2018 for unfairly limiting competition on smartphone operating systems. Google announced in 2019 that search engine rivals will be able to compete for free on Android devices.
Presearch’s private, decentralized search engine option will now be available on Android devices in Europe, alongside several other eligible search engines. Presearch may appear differently depending on the user’s location, despite the fact that the search engines will be listed at random. Presearch can be accessed on desktop or smartphone, regardless of location or device, by downloading the app from Google Play or the App Store.
Presearch conducts over 1 million searches per day on behalf of over 2.3 million registered users. Daily searches have increased by more than 300 percent since January 2021, according to the company. Presearch node operators process all search engine requests and are compensated with Ethereum-based PRE tokens.
PRE tokens are currently trading for less than 5 cents on CoinMarketCap. The project is worth nearly $17 million in total market capitalization.
Although Google continues to be the de facto market leader in the global search engine market, several competitors have attempted to challenge its dominance. Brave, a crypto-powered web browser, recently launched a new privacy-protecting beta search engine as an alternative to Google’s personal data harvesting.
