• Mastercard UK Announces Jose Mourinho NFT Giveaway

  • In collaboration with its current global ambassador, Mastercard UK creates its first NFT as part of a sweepstake for a random, lucky Mastercard holder.

The global icons find their niche as the non-fungible token (NFT) space grows in popularity and overlaps with mainstream industries. Mastercard is the most recent addition to the NFT world. The financial services giant’s U.K. branch announced the launch of its first NFT.

The new NFT will be released in partnership with renowned football coach Jose Mourinho. Mourinho is also a Mastercard global ambassador. The digital collectible on offer is an animated digital football autographed by Jose.

This NFT, however, is not being auctioned. It will be part of a sweepstakes open to Mastercard holders in the United Kingdom. The winner will be drawn at random. The opportunity to win is available until September 30th.

    Crypto financial services titans

While this is Mastercard’s first NFT, it is not the company’s first foray into the cryptocurrency space. Mastercard has made significant investments in crypto and blockchain-integrated services over the last year. The company launched its own corporate program for crypto and blockchain startups. This program aims to accelerate and encourage innovation in the field of technology.

Furthermore, Mastercard announced in July that it intends to improve card functionality for crypto wallets and exchanges.

Mastercard’s competitor Visa is also making crypto-forward moves. The rival financial services provider purchased its first NFT late last month. Visa now owns a $150k CryptoPunk digital collectible. Shortly after its acquisition, the company published an entire whitepaper on NFTs, praising the technology.

According to Visa’s whitepaper, digital collectibles are a “promising medium for fan engagement,” among other things. With Visa and Mastercard both in the NFT game, it’s impossible to predict where the space will go next.
