• In The Mood For An Auction: Wong Kar-First Wai’s NFT Is Now Available At Sotheby’s

  • Wong Kar-Wai, the legendary Hong Kong director, will soon issue a “In The Mood For Love” NFT. Sotheby’s, the world’s most prestigious fine art auction house, will mediate the transaction. The NFT will include previously unseen footage from the first day of filming. What does that make it? What does this mean for the NFT space, given that “In The Mood For Love” is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the century? What does this mean for Asian filmmaking?

So far, we only have one trailer for the entire event:

Sotheby’s presents its Modern Art Sale in Hong Kong in the description box:

“In October, celebrated auteur Wong Kar Wai will bring his avant-garde aesthetic to Sotheby’s. Wong, the first Chinese filmmaker to win Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, embodies the spirit of Modernism, so it is only fitting that we will collaborate on our Modern Art Sale in Hong Kong.

Tell me more about Wong Kar-first Wai’s NFT.

Every time film critics vote, “In the Mood for Love” is listed as one of the best films of all time. Its reputation has only grown since the film’s release in 2000. “In the Mood for Love,” along with Wong Kar-“Days Wai’s of Being Wild” and “2046,” forms an informal trilogy. And now, one lucky person can own a digital representation of previously unseen footage from the film. Its two main actors play characters who are not the same as those in “In the Mood for Love.” What a rare find!

The item is described by the auction house as follows:

“The star lot of Sotheby’s Modern Art Evening Sale on 9 October is Wong Kar Wai’s first ever NFT creation – “In the Mood for Love – Day One” – edited from never-before-seen footage shot on the first production day of the international masterpiece, “In The Mood For Love” (2000).”

They also quote Wong Kar-Wai, who says:

“Today, we have the ability to immortalize this first day in a completely new form. This arrow has the potential to chart a new course in the world of blockchain. Here’s to more of us living and chasing that first spark in every flash.”

What Is Included in the NFT?

In more ways than one, this is a parody of Wong Kar-entire Wai’s trilogy. The main actors from “In the Mood for Love” reprise their roles as completely different characters. What a brilliant idea.

“For the first time, the NFT short film contains rare footage starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung as characters who are diametrically opposed to the iconic lovers from the original film. This one-of-a-kind piece commemorates the critical and wondrous moment when a creative idea is first conceived, while also being the first Asian film NFT to be offered in international auction houses.”

Will this extremely rare NFT with a concept and backed up by a legendary piece of cinema set any records? So far, Beeple’s “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” is the most expensive NFT in the world. Christie’s, a competitor auction house, sold it for $69,3 million. That doesn’t mean Sotheby’s hasn’t been involved. They paid $11.8 million for CryptoPunk #7523, also known as Covid Alien.

Sotheby’s is currently auctioning a lot of 101 Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs. The highest bid is $19M, and the lot will close in about 9 hours. Participate while you still have the opportunity. Alternatively, save your money for the Wong Kar-Wai version.
