The first auction, which begins today, features a rare run of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1-4, with an estimated value of more than $90,000
LOS ANGELES, CA – September 13, 2021 – Curio, the premier NFT platform for the biggest names in entertainment, today announced a partnership with InTrove, a company that connects physical collectibles with NFTs, to provide comic book and NFT collectors with a first-of-its-kind experience. The collaboration brings together two hot markets and creates a new way for collectors to buy and own one-of-a-kind NFTs tethered to unique blue-chip collectible comics. The auctions will feature curated selections of some of the most sought-after comics in mint condition, beginning with a run of extremely rare first printings of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1-4 in CGC 9.4-9.8 condition, with a combined value of more than $90,000.
The innovative approach of Curio and InTrove combines the convenience, innovation, and momentum of NFTs with the proven value of real physical collectibles. When a collector purchases InTrove NFTs through Curio’s auctions, they will be the owner of a digital collectible that is linked to a one-of-a-kind physical copy of an extremely rare and valuable comic book. The NFT allows collectors to digitally display their collection, sell or trade with other collectors instantly, and own a value-added, rare digital component to complement the already-rare physical item. Buyers have the option of storing their items with InTrove partner Diamond International Galleries (with the first six months of storage and insurance included) or receiving the physical copy in exchange for the NFT.
This novel approach addresses critical issues for both traditional and digital collectors. Since 2020, the market for collectible comics and original art has grown by 200-1,000 percent, with no end in sight. More collectors are looking for ways to invest in these properties, and they are currently responsible for preserving, storing, and insuring their items after the auction. Curio’s new partnership with InTrove allows physical items to be held in secure custody while transactions are conducted using the NFT as a proxy. At the same time, it provides digital collectors with the security of owning a collectible backed by an item with its own independent financial value.
Beginning September 13, 2021, the first auctions will feature Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1-4, some of the rarest comics produced since the 1960s. There were only 3,000 copies printed in total, and they are graded CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) 9.4-9.8. To give you an idea of the value, the most recent sale of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 without the NFT element in August was $245,000 USD. Future auctions will feature a curated selection of high-grade and key comic issues from some of the industry’s most renowned dealers and collectors, including Harley Yee, Josh Geppi, and others.
“Curio is committed to pushing the boundaries of what NFTs can mean for their collectors, and our new partnership with InTrove opens up a whole new world for comic book fans and NFT collectors alike,” said Juan Hernandez, CEO of Curio. “There is now a way for collectors to break into the burgeoning NFT market while also retaining a piece of comic book history.”
Curio will be the exclusive platform for InTrove auctions, producing and minting each NFT with images of the specific collectible supplied by InTrove. The auction for an item will be open for one week, and new items will be added on a regular basis. Curio and InTrove will continue to provide a curated selection of truly rare, one-of-a-kind, and premium condition collectible comics, trading cards, video games, artwork, and more for every interest and price range. The show will feature some of the most rare and desirable comics in mint condition, consigned by top collectors.
Collectors of InTrove NFTs will benefit from the following:
- A genuine, physical item that is linked to the NFT upon purchase, as well as the ability to redeem the NFT and receive the physical object at any time;
- InTrove specialized storage (temperature, humidity, and light control) at an offsite secured warehouse provided by Diamond International Galleries;
- A method of flexing your collectibles in virtual space;
- The ability to buy and sell the NFT/collectible instantly on a secondary marketplace, attracting traditional collectors as well as NFT “whales” eager to spend big on new collecting experiences;
- International buyers benefit from increased convenience by avoiding the uncertainties of shipping and customs associated with physical goods.
- A more secure platform for betting on the long-term value of top pop culture properties such as Spider-Man, X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Batman, among others;
- A digital ledger containing information about the physical collectible and who owns it.
- Detailed provenance enables a virtual high-resolution display of the collectible while the physical item is safely stored and protected; and Highly-detailed scans to demonstrate unique details such as signatures and condition, providing security to potential buyers.
“Because of the sensitive nature of these items, comic book collectors looking to cash in on rare items often have to invest even more in proper storage,” said Adam Fortier, President of InTrove. “This collaboration takes all of the pain out of that maintenance while still providing collectors with a way to display their rare collectibles and show off the amazing things they own.”
InTrove provides authentication from one owner to the next, ensuring a chain of custody. This process ensures that the NFT ownership will only belong to the person who has physical possession of the collectible, removing any concerns about unauthorized NFTs and artwork.
